What Is Otosclerosis?
Otosclerosis is an abnormal growth of bone in the middle ear that leads to hearing loss. The condition obstructs the ability of sound to move through the ear. If you’re experiencing otosclerosis, our team at Toledo Clinic ENT will provide the best options so you can reconnect with the sounds in your world.
What Are the Symptoms of Otosclerosis?
- Hearing loss that becomes progressively worse
- Difficulty hearing low-pitched sounds
- Being able to hear easier when there’s background noise
- Tinnitus
- Balance difficulties
How Does Otosclerosis Cause Hearing Loss?
Bones in the ear typically vibrate in response to a sound which allows soundwaves to reach the inner ear and be interpreted by the brain. Otosclerosis causes the stirrup bones inside of the ear to fuse with neighboring bones. Over time this can stop those bones from vibrating as intended and can prevent sound from reaching the inner ear altogether.
More than 3 million people in the U.S have been affected by otosclerosis.
How Is Otosclerosis Diagnosed?
Our otolaryngologist will determine if otosclerosis is causing your symptoms. They may perform a physical examination, hearing tests or a CT scan. They’ll also discuss your questions and concerns, as well as make sure you have a full understanding of your condition.
What Treatments Are Available?
If our provider determines you have otosclerosis, there are multiple options for treatment. If your symptoms are mild, a hearing aid may work. Our team will work with you to find the model that will best suit your needs.
If your symptoms are more serious, a surgery known as a stapedectomy is another option. During this procedure, part of the stapes bone in the ear is replaced with an implant that transmits sound to the inner ear. Patients who undergo a stapedectomy are typically able to return home the same day or one day after the surgery.
If a stapedectomy is right for you, our ENT will thoroughly explain the procedure beforehand so that you know what to expect during surgery and recovery.
