The Problem: Earwax

  • Earwax is naturally produced by the body to protect the ear canal from debris and germs

  • Excessive earwax can cause hearing loss, pain and infection

  • Current methods to clean the ears are messy, ineffective and dangerous, and can cause permanent hearing loss, ear pain and infection

  • Q tips, Wax Vac, ear candling and ear flushing all have significant disadvantages

  • Standard irrigation and suction devices are expensive, impractical and difficult to operate

Earwax is a naturally-occurring bodily substance that is actually pretty useful — in small amounts. It serves as a natural cleanser and tests have shown it has antibacterial and antifungal properties. But for many people, earwax is too much of a good thing. An ear canal plugged up with earwax can cause earaches, infections, and other problems.

New guidelines from the American Academy of Otolaryngology stress a let-it-be attitude and warn against removal unless the earwax is causing a problem. Many people take a do-it-yourself approach. But please do not try to remove the wax with a cotton swab, which tends to push the earwax back into the ear. A clinician tackles an earwax problem with more expertise, a better view, and better tools.
